Piptocarphin F is a cytotoxic natural product that has been investigated for its potential use in the treatment of leukemia. Piptocarphin F is a lactone and has been found to be cytotoxic against the human leukemic cell line HL-60. A preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to isolate piptocarphin F from a crude extract of the marine organism Laminaria japonica. Piptocarphin F is also an antitumor compound, as it induces apoptosis in human leukemic cells. Experiments with piptocarphin F have shown that it inhibits tumor growth and increases survival rates of mice injected with Lewis lung carcinoma cells.
