It is used in the synthesis of formylated derivatives and has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of lepidoptera larvae. 3-Bromo-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-one is prepared by the reaction of ethyl formate with diisobutylaluminium hydride in high yield. The compound can be used as an intermediate in organic chemistry reactions involving nucleophilic substitution and formylation. This compound also has chiral properties and can be synthesized using periodinane and dibromomethane.
