(1S,4S,5R,9R,10R)-3,10-Dihydroxy-5,9,14-trimethyl-15-oxotetracyclo[11.2.1.01,10.04,9]hexadecane-5-carboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of melanogenesis and pigmentation in human skin cells (in vitro). It inhibits the activity of tyrosinase by binding to the enzyme's active site and prevents the oxidation of dopaquinone to dopachrome. In addition to its inhibitory effects on tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis in human skin cells (in vitro), this compound also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA in bacteria (in vitro).
