Ampicillin-d5 is a derivative of ampicillin that has been labeled with the radioactive isotope d5. This compound can be used to monitor the bacterial growth in tissues and animal muscle by measuring the amount of radioactivity. Ampicillin-d5 has been used to study the reaction between antibiotics and transition metal ions, such as tetracycline. This antibiotic binds to DNA and prevents bacterial replication. Ampicillin-d5 is also used in high-throughput analysis of kidney tissue, which can be recovered from an animal within minutes after death.
