Aripiprazole is a psychotropic drug that belongs to the group of atypical antipsychotics, and has been approved for use in the United States. It is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Aripiprazole has been shown to block dopamine receptors (D2 and D3) as well as serotonin receptors (5HT2A). Aripiprazole is also a 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. This drug has been found to be effective in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. The drug is supplied in tablet form, in two dosage strengths: 2 mg and 10 mg. There are many side effects associated with this medication including weight gain, headache, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, sedation or agitation, constipation or diarrhea and menstrual irregularities.
