Methanol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet odor. It can be produced by the natural fermentation of sugars or by the petrochemical process. Methanol is used as a solvent and as an antifreeze. Methanol is also used in the manufacture of formaldehyde, acetic acid, acetone, methyl methacrylate, synthetic rubber, and other chemical products. Methanol causes damage to the kidneys and bladder when ingested in large quantities. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is reduced in both chronic kidney disease patients and animal models due to methanol-induced inhibition of proximal tubular cell function. Methanol produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) that may contribute to cancer progression. In addition, methanol induces tumor angiogenesis and metastasis through activation of VEGF expression in cancer cells.
