GNE 9278 is a potent and selective allosteric modulator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It enhances the neurotransmission activation of these receptors, which are involved in the regulation of neuronal function, by binding to the allosteric site on the receptor. The GNE 9278 compound has been shown to be well tolerated in animals and exhibits high affinity for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. GNE 9278 interacts with extracellular regions of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits and potentiates the activity of the receptor by increasing its sensitivity to endogenous acetylcholine. This drug may be used in treating neurologic disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and schizophrenia.
