It binds to the hydroxyl group of lysine residues on target proteins, which prevents the formation of poly-ubiquitin chains. This inhibition leads to irreversible inhibition of these enzymes and can be used in vivo to treat autoimmune diseases and HIV infection. CID5721353 has been shown to have cell-specific activity, inhibiting only activated T cells in lymphomas.
