Apoptosis Inhibitor II (AI2) is a benzoic acid-based compound that inhibits apoptosis. AI2 has been shown to inhibit cell death induced by xenobiotics in the epithelial tissues of the larval zebrafish. AI2 prevents apoptotic pathways from being activated by blocking channels that are involved in the release of cytochrome c. This drug also prevents rearrangements of cellular structures at nonapoptotic interfaces, such as nuclear pores and mitochondria. AI2 is not an inhibitor of necrosis; it only blocks apoptotic pathways, which are necessary for apoptosis to occur.
