Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride is a benzodiazepine that is used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and for the relief of muscle spasms. Chlordiazepoxide binds to GABA receptors, which are ligand-gated chloride ion channels. Chlordiazepoxide has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that degrade collagen in skin. Chlordiazepoxide also has side effect profiles such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, sedation, and erythema multiforme. The experimental model for chlordiazepoxide toxicity is an acute sublethal dose in rats with a pharmacological agent that induces locomotor activity or clinical pathology (e.g., convulsant agents). This drug also interacts with other drugs like antidepressants, antipsychotics, and alcohol.
