Butyl levulinate is a levulinic acid ester. It is a reaction solution that can catalyze the esterification of levulinic acid and butanol or furfuryl alcohol to produce butyl levulinate. The catalyst for this reaction is typically an acidic substance, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or phosphoric acid. Catalysts are used to promote the reaction. Furfuryl alcohol is typically used as the reactant because it has a higher boiling point than butanol, which makes it easier to work with in the laboratory.
