2-Chlorobenzyl thiocyanate is an organic compound that belongs to the group of benzothiazolium compounds. It is synthesized by reacting 2-chlorobenzaldehyde with sodium cyanide in tetrahydrofuran. The optical properties of this molecule are determined by the presence of a carbonyl group and its conjugated system of double bonds. 2-Chlorobenzyl thiocyanate reacts with nucleophiles, such as water, to form an intermediate hemithioacetal. This reaction is reversible and the product can be regenerated by heating or adding acid.
