The azulene group in the molecule causes it to absorb light and become excited. This excitation leads to the emission of light at a wavelength of 450 nm, which can be seen with a laser. The long-term recording properties are due to the stability of this chromophore as well as its ability to be sensitized by nitrogen atoms in the auxochrome.
