N-Benzylphthalimide is a molecule derived from benzylamine. It has been shown to have antiinflammatory activity, and has been used as a model for the synthesis of other pharmaceuticals. N-Benzylphthalimide has also been shown to inhibit the reaction of phospholipase A2 (PLA2), which is involved in chronic bronchitis. It is thought that N-benzylphthalimide binds to PLA2 by chelating zinc ions, which are essential for the catalytic activity of PLA2.
