1-Phenylcyclohexanecarbonitrile is a dichroic compound that can be used in optical systems. It has been shown to modulate the polymer film and liquid crystal composition of cellulose acetate, which could lead to improved optical properties. 1-Phenylcyclohexanecarbonitrile also has the ability to orient light, which means it can be used as a model system for birefringence. This compound is soluble in non-polar solvents and can be introduced into a liquid crystal by adding an alkylthio group.
