2-tert-Butyl-6-methylphenol is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of a number of other chemicals. It has been shown to be toxic to human liver cells and may contribute to environmental pollution. 2-tert-Butyl-6-methylphenol is a white, crystalline solid that melts at about 145 degrees Celsius. The solubility of this substance in water is low (about 1g/L) and it has a density of 0.964 g/mL at 20 degrees Celsius. This product can be prepared synthetically by reacting phenol with formaldehyde, hydrogen chloride, and methyl iodide. The structure of 2-tert-butyl-6-methylphenol contains two tertiary alkyl groups attached to the benzene ring with methyl groups on the second and third carbon atoms from the end of the chain.
