Octachloronapthalene is a potent inducer of enzymes. It has been shown to increase the activities of various enzymes, such as trypsin and soybean trypsin, in vitro. Octachloronapthalene has been used in wastewater treatment and as an additive to plastics to improve their properties. This chemical also has genotoxic activity and can cause changes in the cellular DNA of hepatic tissues. The use of octachloronapthalene has been shown to speed up the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) process. Octachloronapthalene is a known carcinogen and should not be handled without gloves or protective clothing.
