2-Amino-3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid (2AHMB) is a hydrophobic amino acid that has a 3-hydroxyl group. It is an irreversible herbicide that inactivates dehydratase enzymes, which are necessary for the synthesis of amino acids. 2AHMB inhibits the growth of plants by blocking the production of methionine and threonine, which are essential for protein synthesis. This compound also irreversibly binds to the active site of dehydratase enzymes and prevents them from functioning. 2AHMB can be used as a substrate analog to identify organisms with this enzyme activity.
