1,4-Dichloro-2-butanol is a chemical compound that is used in the analytical method of measuring galacturonic acid. It reacts with a phenol group to form a cyclic ether called an oxetane. The oxetane group can be hydrolyzed by acidolysis to produce 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A (5-ht1a). This chemical compound is also used to study the morphology and crystalline structures of gemini surfactants. 1,4-Dichloro-2-butanol has been shown to have magnetic resonance spectroscopic properties, which are dependent on its crystalline structure. The activation energy for this reaction is found to be 36 kJ/mol.
