It has been shown to be ferroelectric, which means it can be switched from an insulator to a conductor with the application of an electric field. This material has also been shown to have excellent optical properties and an optimal reaction temperature of approximately 150°C. The crystallization process for this material requires deionized water and an organic solvent such as ethylene diamine. Barium 2-ethylhexanoate is most commonly formed by the reaction of fatty acids with alkanoic acid or their esters.
