Methiocarb sulfoxide is a fluorescent derivative of methiocarb, a neonicotinoid pesticide. It can be used to prepare samples for analysis and detect carbaryl in the presence of sulfoxide. Methiocarb sulfoxide reacts with carbaryl in acidic solution to form an orange-colored sulfone derivative. The reaction mixture will fluoresce when irradiated with ultraviolet light at 365 nm. Methiocarb sulfoxide is a sensitive analytical method for detecting carbaryl in urine samples, and also has shown some inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity and intracellular calcium levels in rat liver microsomes.
