N-Pentylaniline is an aromatic compound that has a benzotriazole group. It reacts with aliphatic amines to form azobenzene derivatives. This reaction mechanism is counterintuitive and the yield is high. The product of this reaction has been rationalized by considering the electron withdrawing effect of nitro groups on the benzotriazole ring. N-Pentylaniline also reacts with nitric acid or trifluoroacetic acid to form a nitro group, which can be used in the synthesis of other compounds.
