4-(Diethylamino)butanol-1 is a product of catalyzed hydroformylation. It is used as a catalyst in the homogeneous hydroformylation of alkenes and alkynes to produce linear alpha-olefins. The catalyst is rhodium, which reacts with the olefin substrate and forms an organometallic complex that then reacts with the hydroformylating agent (e.g., formaldehyde) to produce the desired product. The reaction mechanism is similar to that of hydrogenation reactions, where the metal reduces the carbonyl compound and transfers electrons to it, forming a new bond.
