2-Hydroxy-N-(2-phenylethyl)benzamide is a pump inhibitor that inhibits the efflux pumps in bacterial cells that are responsible for transporting out drug molecules. It binds to the bacterial cell wall and blocks the proton channel, inhibiting the accumulation of hydrogen ions. This leads to an increase in intracellular pH, which results in the inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. 2-Hydroxy-N-(2-phenylethyl)benzamide has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus strains that are resistant to other drugs.
