Dioctyl maleate is a basic chemical that is reactive and has a solid catalyst. It can be used in clinical relevance as a solid catalyst in reactions that require high resistance to water vapor and alkanoic acid. Dioctyl maleate is also used as a reactive intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals, such as dimethyl fumarate (a drug for the treatment of multiple sclerosis). The structure of dioctyl maleate consists of an ethylene diamine group attached to two dioctyl groups. The ethylene diamine group contains two hydroxyl groups, which are responsible for its reactivity. The chemical name for dioctyl maleate is 2-octyldodecanol-monoethyl ester with 2-ethylhexanoic acid.
