It can be synthesized by the reaction of benzaldehyde, nitroethane and zinc chloride. The compound is soluble in water and ether but insoluble in chloroform. 3-Chlorobenzylidene)propanedinitrile can be converted into other compounds with a variety of functional groups such as sulphone, chloride, or dihydropyran. These reactions are catalyzed by zinc chloride or anhydrous hydrogen chloride. 3-Chlorobenzylidene)propanedinitrile is often used to produce the cyclic system of conformation because it has three pi electrons in the pyran ring system. This compound has centrosymmetric properties because it contains four identical substituents on its tetrahedral carbon atoms.
