1-Chloro-2,5-diethoxybenzene is a peroxisome proliferator that induces the proliferation of peroxisomes in the liver. The mechanism of action for this compound has been studied using rat primary hepatocytes and microarray technology. It was found to induce oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species production, which leads to lipid peroxidation. 1-Chloro-2,5-diethoxybenzene also inhibits mitochondrial respiration and induces apoptosis. This compound has structural analogs that have been shown to inhibit the same pathways at lower concentrations than 1-chloro-2,5-diethoxybenzene.
