It is an active compound that has been shown to inhibit the transport of glutamate into the cerebral cortex, and may be useful in the treatment of cerebral ischemia. 3-(Benzyloxy)butan-1-ol also binds to pharmacophores that are involved in the transport of carbamazepine, which may explain its ability to reduce neurotoxicity and increase the efficacy of carbamazepine. 3-(Benzyloxy)butan-1-ol is synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with 2-hydroxybutanoic acid, giving a mixture of diastereomers. The diastereomers are separated by chromatography and then reduced with lithium aluminum hydride to give 3-(benzyloxy)butan-1-ol.
