5-Methyl-3-pyridinemethanol is an organic compound that is used in the preparation of rupatadine, a drug used to treat allergic rhinitis. It is prepared by reduction of 5-methyl-3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde with sodium borohydride in an organic solvent at room temperature. The reaction system must be free of oxygen and moisture and the reaction conditions are carried out under high yield and at large scales. The product is purified by crystallization from chloroform or hydrobromide in order to remove impurities.
