(R)-1-(3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl)ethanol is a chiral alcohol that is used as a reagent in the synthesis of 1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepin-4(5H)-ones. It can also be used as a neuroprotective agent by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species and reducing inflammation. The product yield for this reaction is 95%. This compound was synthesized using an enzyme from recombinant Escherichia coli (E. coli). The enzyme catalysis was performed with choline chloride and sodium chloride to produce an alcohol. This process required adding a surfactant to the reaction mixture to prevent precipitation.
