2-Amino-5-phenyl-1,3-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid is a carboxylic acid that inhibits the activity of anhydrase. It was synthesized by the reaction of 2,5-diaminothiazole with ethyl chloroformate and sodium hydroxide. The synthesis of this compound is an important step in the total synthesis of erythromycin A. Functional groups on this molecule include a carboxylic group, an amide group, and a phenyl ring. The functional groups on this molecule are responsible for its inhibitory effects on anhydrase enzymes.
