Spiro[3.3]heptan-2-ol is a small molecule that has been used as a precursor in the synthesis of naphthalene derivatives. It can be obtained by the sequential elimination of two hydrogen atoms from naphthalene through oxidative cleavage. The catalytic oxidation of spiro[3.3]heptan-2-ol with molecular oxygen is an efficient and environmentally friendly method for the oxidative cleavage of benzyl alcohols to yield benzaldehydes and ketones. Spiro[3.3]heptan-2-ol can also be used as a biomolecule that binds to metal ions, such as nickel, which provides an opportunity for applications in catalysis and bioanalytical methods.
