• Descripción: Statins are a class of drugs that inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. The effector functions of statins include inhibition of the synthesis of oncostatin M (OSM) and modulation of the immune system. Statins have been shown to reduce body mass index and serum levels in animal models. There is also evidence that they can reduce the level of endothelial cell proliferation and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in women. Statin homologues have been found in a variety of other organisms, including artemia, which may indicate an evolutionary link between these compounds and their ability to regulate cholesterol metabolism.
