Haemoglobin (Hb) is involved in several functions including: oxygen transport- catalytic nitric oxide metabolism- metabolic reprogramming- pH regulation and maintaining redox balance. Haemoglobin subunit β (HBB) is a globin protein, which, along with alpha globin (HBA) forms a heterotetramer consisting of two alpha chains and two β chains, which makes up the most common form of haemoglobin in adult humans. HBB is encoded by the HBB gene and mutations in this gene are implicated with genetic disorders such as sickle-cell disease and β thalassemia, as well as beneficial traits such as genetic resistance to malaria. The Leucine residue at position 11 of this peptide is isotopically labelled with carbon-13 (6) and nitrogen-15 (1), giving this peptide a mass increase of 7 compared to the unlabelled peptide.
