Chitinase-3-like protein (CHI3L1) is an 18-glycosylhydrolase family member and a neutrophil auto-antigenic target, however CHI3L1 lacks chitinase activity due to an amino acid change in the catalytic region.Up-regulated expression of CHI3L1 is found in several autoimmune diseases and cancers including inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), rheumatoid arthritis and gastric and breast cancers as well as other tumours. CHI3L1 promotes cancer metastasis by triggering the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway. CHI3L1 may encourage the adhesion of pathogenic intestinal bacteria in the gut and antibodies recognising CHI3L1 are found in patients with Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.CHI3L1 is expressed in synovial cells, chondrocytes, smooth muscle cells, macrophages, neutrophils and colonic epithelial cells. CHI3L1 may also play a role in tissue remodelling, cell migration and cell adhesion in different cell types. The leucine residue at position 8 of this peptide is isotopically labelled with carbon-13 (6) and nitrogen-15 (1), giving this peptide a mass increase of 7 compared to the unlabelled peptide.
