Aztreonam is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of beta-lactam antibiotics. It is a synthetic, water-soluble, broad spectrum antibiotic with a good spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Aztreonam binds to the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition and prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Aztreonam has been used in chemotherapy to treat viral infections such as HIV and herpes virus.
