Mesitylglyoxylic acid is a polycarboxylic acid that has been shown to have antagonistic properties against viruses. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of poliovirus, picornavirus, and foot-and-mouth disease virus in cell culture. Mesitylglyoxylic acid binds to the viral RNA by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and thus inhibits viral protein synthesis. The optical isomer of this compound inhibits the replication of Coxsackievirus B3, but not Coxsackievirus A9. Mesitylglyoxylic acid also has been shown to have antidepressant effects in mice.
