Menthone is a monoterpene that has been shown to have genotoxic activity and inhibit the growth of human pathogens. It reacts with water to produce menthol, which is used in cough drops and other products. Menthone also inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA, which may be due to its ability to react with dinucleotide phosphate, an important component of dna. This reaction may be catalyzed by intramolecular hydrogen transfer between the hydroxyl groups on menthone. The analytical method for menthone includes GC-MS and IR spectroscopy.
