1-Propyl-2-pyrrolidinone is a white, crystalline solid with a sweet taste and a chemical formula of C5H9NO. It is soluble in water, but not in common organic solvents. 1-Propyl-2-pyrrolidinone is an excellent solvent for many substances, such as oils and resins. It has been shown to be hypotensive in animal models of hypertension, and may act by increasing the release of nitric oxide from vascular endothelial cells. 1-Propyl-2-pyrrolidinone also has a number of other functions, including acting as an adsorbent for metal ions, which are present in trace amounts in many chemical reactions.
