Alpha,alpha-dimethyl-gamma-butyrolactone is a cyclic compound with a lactone ring. It has been detected in the urine of injecting drug users and in the environment, where it may be formed by the degradation of ethylene gas. Alpha,alpha-dimethyl-gamma-butyrolactone can be metabolized to gamma-hydroxyvaleric acid (GHV), which is thought to be responsible for its psychoactive effects. Alpha,alpha-dimethyl-gamma-butyrolactone also has bioactive molecules that are structurally similar to those found in cryptococcal meningitis and may play a role in this disease's pathogenesis. The use of techniques such as carbonic anhydrase inhibition and transferases inhibition can help to identify alpha,alpha-dimethyl-gamma-butyrolactone's chemotype.
