Allyl butyl ether (ABE) is a chemical compound that contains an allyl group and a butyl group. ABE is a colorless liquid with an odor similar to acetone. It has high solubility in both water and organic solvents, which makes it useful as a solvent for many organic compounds. ABE is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in industrial applications and as an alkylation catalyst in the production of polymers.
Allyl butyl ether belongs to the class of organosulfur compounds. It is produced by the reaction of allyl chloride with butanol. The hydroxyl group on the allylic position reacts with an inorganic acid to form an ester, which can be oxidized into an acid chloride or reduced to give alcohols and hydrocarbons. Allyl butyl ether can be used as a solid catalyst for epoxidation reactions, as well as for polymerization reactions involving acrylates or hydroxy groups.
