2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedione (DMC) is a chemical compound that can be used for the treatment of wastewater. The DMC molecule reacts with levulinate and other carboxylic acids to produce oxetane and carbon dioxide. This reaction also produces calcium carbonate as a byproduct. The reaction time is dependent on the concentration of reactants, which can be controlled by adjusting the pH and temperature. DMC is synthesized from diethyl malonate and cyclopentanone in an asymmetric synthesis process. The vapor pressure of DMC is higher than that of diethyl malonate, which makes it easier to remove from solution after synthesis.
