4-Nitro-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole is an organic compound with the formula CHNO. It is a white solid that is soluble in many organic solvents. It has been used as an antibacterial agent, but its use has been limited by its toxicity to mammals. 4-Nitro-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole binds to the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of paraaminobenzoic acid (pABA) to dihydropteroic acid (DHPA). This reaction prevents the synthesis of folic acid and other tetrahydrofolate derivatives, leading to cell death. 4-Nitro-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole inhibits pyruvate kinase and causes lactic acidosis and inhibition of glycolysis.
