It has been shown to inhibit the replication of both DNA and RNA viruses by reacting with nucleophilic groups on the virus's protein coat. 2-Methylallylamine hydrochloride also inhibits protease activity, which may be due to its chlorine atom. This drug has synergistic effects when combined with other drugs such as triazines or cycloaliphatic compounds. 2-Methylallylamine hydrochloride binds to chloride ions and electron micrographs show that it forms a covalent bond with a hydrocarbon group.
