4-Chlorocinnamonitrile is a deuterium-labeled organic molecule that can be used for the study of hydration. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells and to have anti-inflammatory properties. The cis and trans isomers of 4-chlorocinnamonitrile are both able to induce cell death, although the trans isomer is more potent than the cis isomer. The technique of using deuterium atoms to label molecules has been used as a tool in many areas of chemistry, including organometallic and pharmaceutical research.
