Jacaric acid is a natural compound that has been shown to have beneficial effects in the treatment of metabolic disorders. It has also been shown to be effective against prostate cancer cells, with minimal toxicity and cell lysis. Jacaric acid has also been used as an activator for other drugs, such as sodium citrate, which is used in tissue culture experiments. Sodium carbonate is another activator that has demonstrated significant cytotoxicity and fetal bovine serum (FBS) is a physiological effector for Jacaric acid. Jacaric acid activates epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and induces mitochondrial membrane depolarization in HL-60 cells. This compound also causes polyunsaturated fatty acids to oxidize and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS).
