(R)-a-Amino-omega-caprolactam is an organic compound which is a chiral amino acid. It was first isolated from the fungus Cryptococcus laurentii, and it has been shown to have potent activity against cryptococcal growth. (R)-a-Amino-omega-caprolactam binds to the outer membrane of the fungi, resulting in a loss of nutrients and a decrease in yield. The compound also inhibits the activities of proteolytic enzymes and hydroxamic acid anion channels, which are important for the growth of fungi. The optical purity of this compound can be determined by using difluoro as a reagent. This compound can be administered orally or through injection.
(R)-a-Amino-omega-caprolactam is currently being studied for use in treating cryptococcal meningitis, with promising results in animal models so far.
