Rhusflavanone is an antiviral compound that has been shown to inhibit the replication of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in cell culture. It also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide, which are involved in the initiation and propagation of inflammation. Rhusflavanone shows a significant cytotoxicity against human cervical carcinoma cells and has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of benzodiazepine binding. This compound also possesses a high affinity for flavonoid receptors and acts as an exothermic agent, which may contribute to its antiviral properties. Rhusflavanone also exhibits strong anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the effector proteins of viruses such as HCMV-induced activation of NF-κB, a pro-inflammatory signaling pathway. The molecule is active against P. aeruginosa, which is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause severe infections in patients with chronic lung disease or cystic fibrosis.
