The target compound is an ethyl ester, which can be obtained by adding ethylene glycol and sulfuric acid to the adduct of methyl thioglycolate and toluene. Ethyl 4-oxotetrahydrothiophene-3-carboxylate has been shown to react with thioglycolic acid in a workup procedure, producing the desired product.
