It is used in pharmacology as a research tool, and has been shown to stimulate ion channel currents and inhibit protein interactions. L-651580 binds to the GABA receptor with high affinity (Ki=0.6 nM) and specificity. It stimulates chloride channel currents in cultured neurons, which are blocked by bicuculline methiodide, indicating that L-651580 activates the G protein. L-651580 also increases the amplitude of calcium currents in cultured neurons, suggesting that it may be an activator of the G protein coupled to a calcium channel.
